Subaru Engine Replacement and Rebuilding

(We do not sell stand alone engines.)

Used, New, and Rebuilt. What’s the difference?

A used engine is typically the most inexpensive option and most of our clients have good results. In most cases we can find a good quality used motor from a local parts yard. Sometimes they have very low miles. They are tested and inspected before being shipped and we re-inspect upon arrival. It’s often advantageous to take care of preventive maintenances while the engine is out. Examples would be gaskets, seals and timing components. The downside to a used motor is that its past can be a mystery. How often was the oil changed? Was the correct oil used? Was it driven hard? These engines typically come with a short term parts only warranty. Meaning that if your used engine failed under warranty you would still be responsible for the labor cost of replacing it again. In some cases used engines can be warrantied to include labor and for a longer term. This is an option we can offer when sourcing your used engine.

A new or remanufactured engine, also known as a “crate engine”, from the manufacturer is almost always the most costly route. The upsides are that you know exactly what you are getting.

Besides cost, the downsides are few. Although in a high performance application it is better to have an engine rebuilt to suit your needs.

New engines always come with a warranty and with proper care you can expect excellent longevity.

Rebuilding your engine is the happy medium between used or new. The cost is typically more than a used engine but less than a new one. Arguably a better option than new when using upgraded parts or in a performance application.

A rebuilt engine is disassembled, cleaned and put back together while replacing any worn, problematic or failing parts. A properly rebuilt engine can last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

What’s the difference between a Short Block and Long Block?

A common misconception is that the terms “short block” and “long block” refer to the actual length of an engine, but that is not accurate. The reason they are referred to as short blocks is because there there are less parts included.

A short block is the lower half of an engine fully assembled. It includes the block, crankshaft, connecting rods, bearings, pistons and piston rings. This is an excellent option if your engine has a healthy valvetrain and cylinder heads.

A long block is an almost complete engine. It comes with cylinder heads, valvetrain and oil pump already installed. Parts like the intake manifold, fuel system, oil pan and timing components are simply transfered over from the old motor.
